Huge drop in Coventry Airport passengers

10.04.08

Passenger numbers at Coventry Airport have almost halved in the last year, according to new figures from the CAA. They fell by 46% in January compared with the same month in 2007, after drops of 42% in December and 46% in November.

January was the quietest month since Thomsonfly's passenger flights started at the airport in 2004, with just 18,099 passengers - down from 33,722 in January last year. The data is the most up-to-date available from the CAA.

However, an airport spokeswoman said that the airport is unconcerned at the nosedive. She said: The fall is down to Thomsonfly cutting its flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona and Paris from all of its UK bases. It doesn't do city break destinations any more. But Wizz started a service to Gdansk last month, which will be reflected in passenger figures soon.’

Coventry Airport enjoyed a moderately successful summer last year, with passenger numbers up slightly on 2006. But the steep falls in later months saw its annual figures down by 2%, with the airport handling 598,916 passengers or 61% of its current 980,000 capacity.
