Gatwick flights suspended by Mexicana
09.08.10
Mexicana has suspended its 4 times a week Mexico City flights from Gatwick today. The move comes after the airline filed for bankruptcy protection in Mexico and the US. At the time it said it would continue to operate the flights, but the route is one of 18 now suspended by the airline as it tries to cut costs.
The Mexican national airline, which suffered a dramatic fall in passengers after last year’s swine flu outbreak, has debts of over £628m. In a statement it said that its financial situation was no longer sustainable after the unions failed to agree cost-saving measures. It says its pilots earn up to 50% more than the average wage paid by US airlines and its flight attendants earn 32% more than the US average.
Passengers due to fly with Mexicana over the coming days will be rebooked on other airlines. Those with bookings further forward should contact the airline on 0808 101 7600.
