Passengers up 3.2% at Gatwick

European places proved to be the preferred destinations for travellers at Gatwick last month, as the total number of passengers using the hub jumped by 3.2%. Scheduled flights to the continent had the largest step up in passengers, up 10.5%.

Gatwick's North Atlantic flights experienced the biggest slump in passenger numbers, down 21.1%. They continue to struggle with the after affects of the treaty stuck between the EU and US that opened up rival London airport Heathrow to further airlines. This has witnessed a raft of flights move from Gatwick to Heathrow and continues to depress passengers.

Ireland also proved less popular with tourists as the number of passengers travelling to the country through the airport dropped by 10.3%, thought to be a reflection of its Eurozone status. However, long-haul flights to locations other than the North Atlantic were up on the previous year.
