Thousands of passengers were hit by the collapse of budget airline Oasis, according to a spokesman for Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific. Oasis – which operated 5 Boeing 747-400 planes on routes from Hong Kong to Gatwick Airport and Vancouver – stopped flights last week and went in to liquidation, stranding thousands of its customers.
A spokeswoman for fellow Hong Kong airline said: ‘We have been overwhelmed with stranded passengers trying to get flights in and out of Hong Kong. It’s getting to a point where we can’t help everyone. We’re trying, [but] we’re not linked to Oasis, so don’t have access to their flight bookings. There was an [Oasis] flight each way [from Gatwick] so that’s around 500 passengers per day – we’re talking about thousands of people.’
Cathay offered special one way fares of £160 and operated two extra flights over the weekend between Hong Kong and Heathrow. BA and Air New Zealand have also launched initiatives to help stranded passengers.
