Runway problems cause Flyglobespan prane to divert

01.05.08

A Flyglobespan flight from Lanzarote had to be diverted to Glasgow Airport earlier this week, after two aborted attempts to land. The flight had been delayed by half an hour before take off and the Boeing 737-700, with over 100 passengers on board, came in to land at Edinburgh Airport at 02:35 on Monday.

The plane was attempting to land on a temporary runway, as the main runway is closed at night until November for major resurfacing works. However, the temporary runway does not have an instrument landing system that gives precision radio and lighting guidance to approaching aircraft and, after two failed attempts to land, the pilot diverted to Glasgow Airport. Buses were laid on to take the passengers back to Edinburgh.

A Flyglobespan spokesman said: ‘We apologise to our passengers for the inconvenience caused. Poor visibility and lack of a landing guidance system on the secondary runway at Edinburgh Airport prompted the pilot's actions. Safety is always our main concern.’
