BA cabin crew want strike ballot

07.09.10

BA cabin crew voted for a new strike ballot yesterday. Between 1000 - 1500 Unite members met at Kempton Park Racecourse last night to discuss the next move in the bitter dispute that has lasted over a year. According to Sky News, a majority of those attending the meeting voted to hold a new ballot, raising the possibility of strike action over Christmas.

A BA spokesperson told aviation website ABTN the airline continues to be in contact with Unite, after talks yesterday and with more planned for next week. He said: ‘Unite's [BA specific] cabin crew branch BASSA has been talking about a ballot for 3 months. It does not have the authority to call a ballot. BASSA does not represent the majority of our cabin crew. Only a third of its members supported previous strikes and even fewer voted against our last offer.'

The general secretaries of Unite must approve the vote before any ballot can go ahead. There is no time frame for the ballot and it is not clear what issues it might address, with BASSA unhappy with the way striking cabin crew have been treated and Unite focusing on pay and conditions.
