Transport Minister Teresa Villiers has ruled out a switch to ‘mixed mode’ operation at Heathrow again. Her department made similar statements last month. The new announcement comes as the airport prepares to switch to mixed mode for 6 weeks whilst runway repairs are carried out from next.
Currently Heathrow's two runways are restricted to either take-off or landing and switch each afternoon. It had been feared that the Government could approve a switch to mixed mode - that would allow all-day take off and landing on both runways and increase the airport's capacity. Mrs Villiers said: ‘Any benefits mixed mode might bring to the airport are outweighed by the negative impact on local communities.’
