BA has changed its seating policy for unaccompanied children after a businessman complained of being treated like a ‘child molester’. The airline had an internal rule that prohibited male passengers sitting next to unaccompanied children on flights.
BA has changed the policy following a legal case brought by hedge fund manager Mirko Fischer who, after swapping seats with his pregnant wife so that she could be by the window, ended up sitting next to a boy he did not know. Cabin crew asked him to move seats because he was next to the unaccompanied child, but did not have the same problem when his wife was sat next to the boy.
Mr Fischer protested that the rule broke the sex discrimination laws and said he felt he had been treated like a ‘child molester.’ He took the airline to court and won a compensation order after the airline admitted sex discrimination. He told the Telegraph newspaper that he is ‘delighted’ by the policy change.
