When regulators told American Airlines, BA and Iberia that they would have to give up slots at Heathrow to be allowed to form a joint venture on transatlantic flights, the question raised was whether a competitor would take the slots and launch routes on which the airlines dominate to such an extent. Delta Air Lines answered that question this week, announcing it would like to begin flights from Miami and Boston to Heathrow, the Dallas News reports.
American and BA dominate the Boston - Heathrow route, and they are the only scheduled airlines operating between Miami and Heathrow. This is why both the EC and the US Department of Transportation singled out these routes when they approved the joint venture. Both required the airlines to give up takeoff and landing slots to increase competition.
Delta said this week that it will offer two daily round trips between Boston and Heathrow and a single roundtrip between Heathrow and Miami. A spokesman for the airline told the News: ‘These new services will provide more choices and competition for customers traveling between important US cities and London. Awarding these slots to Delta and the SkyTeam alliance will significantly enhance competition across the Atlantic.'
