Virgin Atlantic made a significant operating loss last year, but its revenues and passenger numbers rose in the first quarter of its current year. Its pre-tax operating loss for the year to February 2010 was £132m, compared with a profit of £60m in the previous 12 months. Its total revenue decreased 8.6% to £2.35bn, but its operating costs also fell by 8%. The airline said customer compensation and operational costs of the Iceland ash cloud crisis were likely to be £30m.
However, the airline's revenue for the March - May 2010 quarter was up 10% to £513m, while its planes flew 82% full - a 5 percentage point improvement on the same period last year. Virgin also carried 15% more passengers in its lucrative Upper Class cabin and benefited from a successful start to its new service to Accra in Ghana.
