A group including the world's leading airlines have dealt a blow to the Mayor’s plans to replace Heathrow with a new airport in the Thames Estuary. The proposed £40bn six-runway airport would be constructed on reclaimed land and has been dubbed 'Boris Island'. It would end the need for Heathrow's third-runway as well as flights over south-west London, leading to Heathrow's eventual closure.
However, the Board of Airline Representatives - which makes up 90% of Heathrow's operators - said there are insurmountable safety risks concerning the estuary's bird colonies, which would result in aircraft strikes like the one that caused a plane to ditch in the Hudson River in New York last year.
BA's chief executive, Willie Walsh, also said that a study commissioned by Medway Council suggests closing down Heathrow would lead to a 'vast wasteland west of London'. The study's findings are to be presented to deputy Mayor, Kit Malthouse, this week.
