Over a tonne of liquid tobacco has been seized by UK Border Agency employees at Heathrow. The parcels of tobacco molasses, used in traditional Middle Eastern hookah pipes, were discovered within a cargo shipment declared as ‘fresh papaya’ from Saudi Arabia.
The syrupy substance had to be despatched for forensic tests to substantiate what it was. It is thought to be the first confiscation of its kind at Heathrow. If it had been declared appropriately roughly £77,000 worth of duty would have been due.
The UK Border Agency Heathrow Director Phillip Astle said: ‘This is a substantial and abnormal haul of tobacco as well as a tremendous find by our officers.‘
