Airbus has partnered with Heathrow, Singapore Airlines and air traffic management company NATS to launch an enhanced departure method for SIA's Airbus A380 avoiding wasting fuel and cut noise emmissions. The businesses have worked jointly over the past year to develop the revolutionary procedure, which permits the A380 to make use of less power when taking off from Heathrow and use flexible acceleration of as much as 4000 ft when it is at a height of 1,500 ft.
Airbus confirmed the modification will help SIA save 300kg of fuel per flight, equating to 1 metric tonne of emissions of CO2 on a flight to Singapore, and in addition lowering Nitrogen Dioxide emissions. The plane also remains within the airport's strict noise limits because it produces half the noise energy at takeoff and cuts the region exposed to equivalent noise ranges around the airport runway by half.
SIA Senior Vice President Flight Operations Captain Gerard Yeap said: ‘Our work with Heathrow, NATS and Airbus shows what is accomplished when stakeholders share the goal of reducing carbon emissions and fuel burn. Singapore Airlines is dedicated to playing its part in ensuring greener skies and sustainable air travel, and we hope this development will serve as a model for airport operators and governments elsewhere in the world.’
