The US Department of Transportation (DOT) says plans by American Airlines, BA and Iberia to coordinate schedules, fares and frequent flier programmes on transatlantic flights should receive antitrust immunity. But to protect competition, the airlines must give up 4 pairs of slots to competitors for new service between the US and Heathrow.
The US Justice Department had argued that allowing the venture could cause fares to rise up to 15% on some transatlantic routes, but the DOT decided to back the application. A final decision on antitrust immunity will follow a 60-day public comment period.
