Unite, the union representing the majority of BAs cabin crew, lost its High Court bid to stop the airline imposing cost-cutting measures. The court ruled in favour of BA today in the latest clash in a bitter dispute with the union.
Unite challenged BA's cost-cutting measures, introduced last November, which included reducing cabin crew numbers on long haul flights from Heathrow, saying this contravened staff employment contracts. BA argued it could reduce staff numbers on flights as these are not terms of individual staff contracts. It said the changes only brought BA into line with what competitors were already doing and what the airline had already introduced - with the union's agreement - at Gatwick.
Judge Sir Christopher Holland ruled in BA's favour. In a statement, BA said: ‘We are extremely pleased with the ruling that the changes made to onboard crew numbers on flights from Heathrow were reasonable, do not breach crew contracts and can remain in place.’
