Up to 3500 BA staff - including 1000 pilots - have volunteered to work as cabin crew to help break a widely expected strike, the Daily Mail reports. They will work with existing cabin crew who do not strike, plus former cabin crew who will return to the airline on a temporary basis having left last year.
With so many staff willing to help, it is likely that BA will be able to run a limited service if its 12,000 cabin crew back a union call to walk out. A 'union source' told the Mail: 'BA are not going to be able to run a normal operation, but with so many volunteers they could run more than just a skeleton service.' This could include something near to a full service on important routes.
The result of the strike ballot will be formally announced tomorrow, with both the Unite union and BA expecting a vote in favour of industrial action. The dispute is over cost saving measures including on jobs, pay and working conditions, with a deal between management and the union appearing unlikely.
