BA use ghost flights to train strike breakers

28.02.10

BA is training strike-breaking cabin crew on 'ghost flights', with staff standing in for passengers, the Telegraph reports. Special trips between Heathrow and both Cardiff and Glasgow are being used to allow the stand-in crews to practice on real flights.

Trips to BA's Cardiff and Glasgow engineering bases for aircraft maintenance are being used for the training flights, but the airline is also reported to be running extra flights solely for training. BA told the Telegraph: ‘It is an opportunity for the volunteer crew to experience a flight and how to act as a team.’

Cabin crew are normally trained on scheduled flights with real passengers but, given the limited time available before a likely strike next month, the volunteers are having to make do with role-playing colleagues. Friends of the Earth described BA's decision to put on the ghost flights as 'shocking'.
