BA will meet Unite in the High Court on Tuesday, the latest step in its dispute with the cabin crew union to be decided by the courts. This time Unite has taken BA to court, claiming the airline broke staff contracts when it imposed new working arrangements last November that include cutting cabin crew from 15 to 14 on long-haul flights.
The changes are designed to save BA £140m a year and allowed 1000 crew to take voluntary redundancy. The union is currently holding a strike ballot of the remaining 12,000 BA cabin crew members, after its first ballot - and planned 12 day Christmas and New Year strike - was blocked by BA in the courts.
BA says that the changes did not 'alter contractual terms and conditions for individual crew members', and points out that it only introduced the changes after a year of fruitless talks with the union. Unite claims that BA forced through the changes, and that this imposition represents a slippery slope for further enforced changes to working practices.
