easyJet is being denied access to Cairo International Airport, according to the Wall Street Journal. Egyptian officials are demanding that the budget airline offer increased services on its flights - in effect to stop being a budget airline and charge more for its flights ! - in order to be granted access to the airport.
Carolyn McCall, easyJet's CEO, told the newspaper: ‘Technically, we can fly’ to Cairo. However, she said that the airline has not been given clearance by Egypt’s aviation authorities.
Last year, the CAA gave easyJet 3 weekly landing slots starting on October 31, 2010 after an agreement with Egypt raised the number of weekly slots on London to Cairo or Alexandria routes to 14 slots from 11. easyJet originally hoped to start flights to Cairo last November, but its application for time slots was rejected and it has yet to receive clearance to start the flights.
