An easyJet plane flying to Luton Airport from Greece was forced to turn back and make an emergency landing after it developed a ‘technical problem’mid-flight. Passengers described the panic after the plane suffered an engine fire shortly after taking off from Athens.
The Boeing 737 operating Flight EZY 2002 made an emergency landing at the Greek airport 40 minutes after taking off. Passengers reported a loud noise and flames coming from one of its engines. One is quoted as saying: ‘People started shouting, and we were just hanging on for grim death.’
A spokeswoman for the airline said the plane returned to Athens and landed safely. The 119 passengers were offered the option of taking the easyJet flight to Gatwick later on Sunday or being given a hotel room and catching the next day's flight to Luton. An investigation is under way, she added.
