Sabre says some budget airlines are no longer low cost

11.05.08

easyJet, bmibaby and a some other budget carriers can no longer be considered as low-cost airlines, the Times reports Sabre Airline Solutions saying. A survey of 540 airlines by the travel technology company revealed that of the 123 that said they were low-cost operators, more than half offered services which were more in keeping with traditional airlines, such as code sharing and multiple classes of service.

Murray Smyth, vice president of Sabre, told the newspaper: ‘The low cost segment is one of the most competitive in the industry. This has spurred many budget airlines to explore ways of evolving their business to remain competitive and sustainable.'

'For some, this has meant adopting some full-service airline business practices to help grow their passenger base in to the business segment and expand their reach in the marketplace, although they have often added their own twist on how these practices are implemented.’

Sabre says that the airlines adopting these practices should be considered as hybrid rather than low-cost airlines. It includes easyJet, Germanwings and bmibaby in this category.
