Manchester Airport is to be connected to the city centre via its Metrolink tram system by 2016. The decision to give the green light to 3 new connections for the city's tram system was taken at a meeting of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) earlier this week.
Around £500m has been committed by the Greater Manchester Transport Fund to connect the airport to the tram system from the middle of 2016. Oldham and Rochdale city centres will also be served by trams from spring 2014.
Geoff Muirhead, chief executive of Manchester Airports Group, said: ‘We are delighted with this news. We have been supporters of the Metrolink extension since it was first proposed.’ He added that the airport has already invested over £100m in the airport station facilities.
