Contracts have been signed for the construction of a new Metrolink line to Manchester Airport via Wythenshawe. MPact-Thales have been appointed to design, construct and maintain the line, with similar contracts also awarded for the extensions to Oldham and Rochdale.
David Leather, chief Executive of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, said: ‘This is a milestone in Metrolink history. It will see the system almost treble in size compared to today’s network. We expect that trams will be running to Oldham and Rochdale town centres by spring 2014 and to Manchester Airport by mid 2016.'
