Many employees will get an extra weekday holiday next week because New Year's Day is on a Sunday – and they are taking advantage of this to fly away for a long weekend to destinations including Lisbon, Madrid, Oslo, Milan and Dublin. New York is also popular for couples looking to celebrate the start of 2012 in style.
Some 132,000 people flew to or from Manchester over the Christmas weekend, a 6% increase on last year, and round 673,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport between December 19 and January 4 – the entire festive period.
