Massive growth predicted for Manchester Airport

09.03.10

Manchester Airport is to double the number of flights it handles and become as busy as Heathrow is today by 2050, the Evening News reports that a Government report has predicted. According to an official forecast, there will be 449,000 take offs and landings at Manchester by 2050 - up from 213,000 in 2005, which implies a plane taking off or landing on average every 70 seconds.

The Department for Transport put forward the projections as part of work to work out Britain’s carbon dioxide emissions. The projections were inlcuded in a report to the Committee on Climate Change, and have been described as ‘shocking’ by opponents of the airport’s expansion. Campaigners warned that the surge in flights will result in an extra terminal being built at Manchester Airport, although an airport spokesperson denied this.

The report suggests that Manchester will be the quickest growing of the 4 leading UK airports and will overtake Gatwick growing to become the second busiest. By 2050, it is predicted to handle as many flights as Heathrow does now. However, Heathrow is also forecast to grow, albeit at a slower pace than Manchester, and will still be the country’s busiest airport, with just over 700,000 flights.
