Hundreds of passengers at Newcastle airport suffered 24 hour delays this week, in the run-up to what is expected to be the airport's busiest bank holiday weekend ever. Two Excel Airways flights were delayed by a day on Friday and today, which kept the newcastle airport hotels busy.
An Excel Airways flight from Newcastle to Orlando, which was supposed to leave on Thursday, was delayed overnight and left yesterday instead. And another Excel flight, from Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, which was due to leave on Friday morning, is now due to leave this morning.
A spokesman for Newcastle airport blamed 'operational problems' at Excel for the delays. He said that the airline was waiting for a chartered Air Atlanta plane to fly up from Gatwick to take the stranded passengers to Orlando.
A spokesman for Excel said: 'For insurance purposes, letters regarding the delayed Puerto Plata flight will be given out prior to departure. Passengers are advised to contact their tour operator for further information.'
The delays come as more than 1200 flights are scheduled to arrive and depart from Newcastle over the bank holiday weekend, the busiest in the airport's history.
