Stansted’s latest re-cycling initiative - food waste composting - is helping it get on-track to meet its target of zero landfill waste by 2015. A spokesman for the airport said: ‘Just over 10 years ago, 93.5% of our waste went directly to landfill. Today, over 50% is re-cycled and our target is to be sending zero by 2015.'
‘Our new food composting initiative, where catering companies place food waste into biodegradable bags, has seen fantastic results in the first 3 months. The catering companies have latched on to the cost saving benefits associated with the scheme, engaged staff and over 60 tonnes of food waste was diverted from landfill between May and July this year. This is a great result, which we intend to build on.'
