Michael O'Leary, the headline grabbing head of the budget airline Ryanair, is at it again. Not content suggesting that the airline could charge passengers to use toilets and install standing 'seats' so far this year, he has now called for co-pilots to be removed from planes to save money, with air stewardesses trained to land his planes in an emergency.
In an interview with Bloomberg Business Week, Mr O’Leary said: ‘Why does every plane have two pilots? Really, you only need one. Let’s take out the second pilot. Let the bloody computer fly it.’ When asked what would happen if the single pilot became ill while flying, he said: ‘He rings the bell and calls an air stewardess in. She could take over.’
Jim McAuslan, the general secretary of the British Airline Pilots’ Association, the pilots union, responded: ‘Are there no lengths to which he will not go to get publicity [answer, no]? His suggestion is unwise, unsafe and the public will be horrified.’ The public is more likely to be amused at this latest headline grabbing nonsense.
