Ryanair is in the market for 200 - 300 new aircraft, its chief executive said in an interview with the FT. The airline pulled out of talks to buy around 200 planes from Boeing late last year after failing to agree on terms. But Michael O'Leary told the FT there is still the option of buying up to 300 from either Boeing or its rival Airbus.
Mr O'Leary has been trying to play Airbus off against Boeing for the last couple of years in order to get the lowest prices. However, the strategy does not appear to be working, because Airbus is refusing to enter talks after Ryanair previously shook hands on a deal only to back out. The European plane maker has described Ryanair as a 'Boeing customer', with any deal offered unlikely to lead to sales, but likely to leak in to the market and affect its prices with other airlines.
This has weakened Ryanair's negotiation position with Boeing, with the US plane maker standing firm, despite a number of outburst from Mr O'Leary and the airline eventually walking away from the negotiating table. However, it would appear that the airline wants to get back to talks. Ryanair told both manufacturers in the summer that it could buy ‘200 to 300’ aircraft if suitable prices and terms were offered, Mr O'Leary told the FT, although there were no negotiations at present.
