Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said his budget airline is the equivalent of Lidl or Aldi in the skies. The budget airline recently raised a range of proposals aimed at cutting costs, including standing areas on planes and pay to use toilets.
In an interview on BBC's Newsnight, Mr O'Leary defended the airline’s relentless cost cutting, saying there are ‘no hidden costs’ on Ryanair [really !] and that ‘everything we do is to lower costs’. Asked whether he would be charging customers £1 to use a toilet on flights in order to remove two toilets and add two rows of seats, he said: ‘I hope so’ - even though plane maker Boeing has dismissed the plan as it would require re-certifying the planes.
Plans to introduce vertical seats, which would allow passengers to be strapped in while standing up, will also not meet safety requirements, the CAA has said. Mr O'Leary denied that Ryanair is on the acquisition trail, saying there were ‘not other airlines to buy in Europe’.
