A burning smell on an easyJet flight between London Stansted airport to the Italian city of Bologna caused the aircraft to make an emergency landing, airport officials said today. The plane was evacuated immediately and no one was injured during the incident.
The easyJet Airbus plane with 119 passengers and 6 crew had left Stansted and was 10 minutes away from landing in Bologna at around 14:00 today, when the smell of something burning caused the pilot to report possible trouble. This triggered emergency procedures at Bologna airport, spokeswoman Annarita Benassi said.
Benassi said fire officials were checking the plane, but early indication were that the smell was caused by an electric oven overheating. Firefighters have yet to find a fire or even smoke on board.
Referring to the two recent plane crashes, Benassi said: 'Given what's happened in the last few days we're being very careful. In reality, it was a trifle.' The airport was not closed, and only a few flights suffered minor delays.
