Ryanair blamed this year's ‘remarkably hard winter’ for a big drop in its flight punctuality last month. 81% of its flights were on time in January, against 89% in the same month last year. The airline also reported a near three fold increase in complaints, up from 0.88 complaints per 1000 passengers in 2009 to 2.12 per 1000 in 2010.
The budget airline takes great pride in its punctuality and low level of complaints, and never misses an opportunity to call itself ‘Europe’s number one on-time airline'. Some even suggest that it even exaggerates (or rather inflates) its scheduled flight times in order to boost its on time figures.
A Ryanair spokesman said the airline had to contend with snow and ice over the long winter, especially during the big freeze in early January, which saw the closure of a number of UK and European airports.
